The newest trend is called rapid prototype. Advancements in machining speed and flexibility combined with sophisticated electronic computer interfaces allow for cost-effective, exact metal sample parts or molds for plastic injection parts. Technical and application engineers at Makino, a global provider of advanced machining technology, say that such advanced machining technology permits companies to cut manufacturing steps. These eliminated steps are primarily created because steel can now be milled as quickly and cost-effectively as aluminum or other lighter materials. Such progress allows mold builders and other manufacturers to actually develop applications which can be utilized immediately to make more products. This allows their customers to get new products to market faster. Many other kinds of rapid prototype don’t carry the real properties that the customer is trying to simulate. Most rapid prototypes are made from the raw material intended for the final product, which makes it identical to what is actually going to be put in production. Customers can get a hardened steel or prehardened steel part or mold in five or six weeks versus 10 or 12 weeks from previous processes. This is a timesavings they appreciate in an effort to get their product to market faster and less expensively. Technological advancements like CAD and other sophisticated computer interfaces can positively combine with state-of-the-art machine tools that are accurate, rigid and stable in order to achieve maximum results. Customers can save up to two-thirds of the total time originally required by more traditional mold building processes.

In the fast paced world of plastic mold, injection mold design is one of the most interesting and challenging jobs to be found. You will draw upon all of your creative abilities as you develop the design for new products.

It might look easy because of the powerful CAD programs, but in reality, they are just tools to help you. In the field of injection mold design you often must develop new and original methods of plastic mold. This sometimes requires a lot of creativity and inventiveness. What is a typical day like for injection mold design? Most injection mold designers follow a schedule similar to the mold makers. Because their mold designs are soon going to be manufactured by the mold makers, there is a very close relationship between these two.

A mold designer spends most of his time at his computer, using powerful CAD programs such as Unigraphics, AutoCAd, SolidWorks, MasterCam and many, many others. Nowadays, the programs are incredibly fast and powerful.

Very often the mold designer will be required to communicate with the various mold makers, CNC programmers, WEDM operators, etc.. This rapport is critical for a successful career as an injection mold designer.

Usually the designer does not work quite as many hours per week as the mold maker. Often mold designers have a shop background and help out in the mold making shop as well. This is especially common if there is a slowdown in design and a lot of work in the shop. How do you become an injection mold designer? Essentially, there are two paths in the USA. One is to learn on the job and the other is to learn at a design school. Both are common and work well.

Many plastic mold designers come from a mold making background. This is especially helpful to provide a realistic approach to mold design. There is no substitute for practical experience!

Plastic mold has been developing about 40 years. It occupies a very important position in the plastic molding process. Plastic mold plays a very important part in the mold industry. Mold production technology is also a one of the important symbols of a country’s level in manufacturing process. In the international community, in order to make industrial molds for better development, some countries have propped up the relevant policies. A Day Of A Plastic Mold Maker’s Life

What Is It Like To Be A plastic mold Maker?

Ok, raise your hand if you personally know a plastic mold maker, hmmm… I don’t see any hands up! Well, who knows what a mold maker does? This doesn’t look good, so I will try to give you a little insight into this unknown world.

I have one of those “invisible jobs” that is seldom recognized, but universally valued. You see, almost everyone likes using their cell phone, computer, driving their car, playing CD’s, and generally enjoying the fruit of all our hard work.

Yet, almost nobody ever thinks about where all this stuff comes from. In fact, I’ve been asked some very strange questions over the years about what I do, such as when my own mother asked me how many molds I made a day! I told her it takes anywhere from 4-12 weeks to make a typical mold and she just sort of cocked her head and replied, ‘Oh.”

Let’s just take your computer mouse for example. It is entirely made of plastic, and it took a mold maker to make the mold to make the mouse components. I am guessing that there are 10 pieces altogether in the mouse, so that means 10 different molds had to be made. Here is a little view into a typical day of an American plastic mold maker. It doesn’t really vary too much around the world either, just in the details and amount of overtime and specialization.

He, (I’ve never seen a she, though I heard about one once) starts work at either 6 or 7 a.m. I also have never known a mold maker who started later on a regular basis. He typically works a 9 or 10 hour day and often 5 hours on Saturday. Before Asia became a mold making force to be reckoned with, there was basically unlimited overtime for everyone.

He has likely been in plastic mold making for over 25 years, had two years of technical school, and worked as an apprentice for 4 years. That is a lot of training and experience, which is quite necessary because there is so much to know and master.

What is Injection plastic mould and How Does it Work?

Injection plastic mould is a way of creating multiple parts that are the same shape. For example, if you have a manufacturing company and you need to create a large volume of plastic parts that are the same shape and size, then you would use plastic injection plastic mould machines to speed up your production line. The great thing about it is that it’s cost effective and it also requires little supervision from staff.

Injection rapid prototype works in a few stages. Firstly, the plastic is melted and pushed into a rapid prototype. The mould is then squeezed together to form the shape of the piece required. Next the machine will cool the mould (usually using water) and you are then left with a perfectly formed piece of plastic ready for the next stage in your production line.

Most of the time, people use injection plastic mould to make things faster and to make sure that things are very accurate. The machines that are used are all computerised and this means that they run like clockwork and are very accurate. They are ideal for creating the same product over and over again in a hurry.

Car manufacturers use these machines a lot – so for example, the lid of a radiator bottle in a car will be created using this. There are hundreds of cars made every year and therefore this sort of process is required to ensure speed and accuracy.

Hand making plastic products like this would be a real nightmare and although sometimes this is required, injection plastic mold is simply used when speed is of the essence. It’s also very cost effective because the only costs are the initial purchase, the plastic mold and of course water to cool the moulds when needed.

This makes it a very popular option for businesses who need to make things like this. Most major manufacturers use this service and there are a lot of options available on today’s market. You should have no problems finding something that’s suitable for your needs.

How Rubber Plastic Mold Are Made

In order to give you some idea of the process involved in making a rubber or latex plastic mold, here is a quick rundown.

Part 1 – The easy part, decide what it is you want to copy or make your plastic mold of and get one.

Part 2 – This is the long part. It could take 5 or 6 days if you are only able to paint a couple of times a day. You cover your original – lets say it is a frog – with release agent. You may not always have to do this. Some plastics and resins do not need it. Now paint the frog with the rubber paint. Let it sit until it is almost dry – you can put your finger on it and no paint sticks to your finger. Paint it again and again. Do this until you have built up a thickness of about 3/16″ or so. You can judge this by painting a piece of wood or something every time you apply a coat to the frog. Look at the wood to see how thick your test paint is.

Part 3 – After the paint has dried for 2 or 3 days you can start to make the support for the rubber plastic mold. If you can picture the rapid prototype as a rubber glove, when you fill the glove with water it will stretch. You have to stop the stretch. Most of the time this is done with a fiberglass case or backing that you will make to go over the plastic mold. You may have to make this case in 2-3-4-5 or more pieces that will bolt together. This is so you can take the case off easily. If there are a lot of undercuts in your frog then chances are your case will be several pieces. You can avoid having a lot of pieces by filling undercuts on the outside of your frog before you start to make the case. This means more time painting on the rubber paint. This is a good thing because the fewer pieces in the case the easier it is to use. When you make your case it has to have a good big base, it will be holding the rubber plastic mold upright when you fill it with concrete. You don’t want it to fall over just when you get to the top!

Part 4 – Take the rubber off the original. Be careful! It will be inside-out. Now you can sprinkle a little talc on it and turn it inside-in. Put it into the fiberglass case you made, bolt or clamp the case closed, invert the case so that it is sitting on that big base we where talking about. Mix your concrete and fill the rapid prototype. Let it sit to cure for a couple of days. This is the test run for this plastic mold and case so you want the concrete extra hard when you do your first de-plastic mold.

Part 5 – Unbolt the case and take out your casting. Carefully take the rubber plastic mold off the casting. If you are a skilled plastic mold maker it should be right the first time!! If not you need to look at any problem areas and decide what you can do to correct them.

Now you can see why the rubber or latex plastic molds cost so much and why they take a couple of weeks or more to make.

The building time can be shortened by using fast drying silicone based rubber, it is a little more expensive but…. Plaster can be used instead of fiberglass if the plastic mould is not going to be used a lot. This is cheaper but not nearly as good as fiberglass.

My thought is that for a person to start into the casting business the best way is to start with a few plastic plastic mould – no fiberglass backing needed – do a few pours and see if you want to keep at it. If you decide you do, then as your skills increase, start to think about investing in a simple latex rapid prototype. You may be able to find a used one in good shape. Try it and see if you want to do that type of casting.

The results are great once you have mastered the process but it is not a cheap or easy thing to do as a novice.

What is Plastic Injection Molding?

The major advantage is that it is very reliable and cost-effective. Also, this process produces smooth and finished products that require no further finishing. The equipments involved in plastic mold injection molding are very sophisticated and costly. They are known as injection molding machines. The machinery used are also heavy and some even weigh up to tons of kilogram. But only when these kinds of machines are used the final product turns out to be a quality product. This is so because the plastic molds are fed into these machines and they are heated until they become fluid. This signifies that the machines should bear up high temperature and thus comes the requirement of sophisticated equipments.

The plastic mould when poured, takes the shape of the cavity or the mold used and get solidified or settled in it. After some time molded material is ejected out from the cavity. The same cavity can be used to make any number of molds. The mold can be of any preferred shape. The mold has two components namely the injection mold and the ejector mold. The melted plastic mold resin is transferred into the mold and the ejector mold helps in ejecting the plastic mold part after it is solidified in the mold without any damage using ejecting pins.

The next procedure is the use of hydraulic or mechanical pressure. Air gets trapped inside the mold and this is done to release the air. This is known as the dwelling process. The air cavities are pushed to one corner of the mold when pressure is applied. Then the fluid is allowed to solidify and the mold is cooled. Finally the solidified plastic mold part is taken out from the mold either manually or automatically.

The plastic mold parts experience a change in their physical as well as chemical properties once the cooling process takes place. The most eminent design contemplation of the plastic mold injection molding process is the width of the mold. Usually a mold with a uniform wall thickness is favored. This helps in reducing the change in mechanical properties of the plastic mold part.
